Florence has the highest concentration of masterpieces and people working in heritage conservation in the world and it provides the best opportunities to acquire and perfect knowledge and skills for the protection of cultural heritage.
In May, the Institute organises specialisation courses for continuous professional development so people working in the sector and update their knowledge.

The course on the use of funori in paper restoration is an advanced CPD course dealing with the theoetical and practical elements on the use of these algae as an adhesive for strengthening, comparing it with ther adhesives commonly used in restoration.

Contact Hours and Location

From Monday to Friday every afternoon from 14 to 18 for a total of 20 hours.
The course will take place at the Pio de' Bardi building in Via de' Michelozzi, 2, Florence.


The course is open to restorators, assistant restorers, sector experts, and graduates in history of art and conservation science.


A certificate of attendance will be issued to all participants.



Introduction to Funori and its use in restoration, specifically in paper restoration

Preparation of the Funori solution, hot and cold

Preparing sample paper of various tyoes: mechanical cleaning, pH measurement, thickness and solubility tests, washing and drying 

Application of Funori solutions on various different types of paper

Comparison with other types of cellulose (Tylose MH300p, Glutofix 600 and KlucelG)

Thickness measurements and pH of samples and comparisons


Prospective students must send the following documents to the Secretariat of the Institute for Art and Restoration:

  4. Copy of a valid ID document

Students are advised to enrol at least two weeks before the course start date. Enrolments are accepted depending on the availability of places on the course.
