Museum Collections Management
Context
Museums today face complex challenges in managing their collections responsibly, transparently, and sustainably. This course offers participants a comprehensive introduction to the principles and practices of museum collection management, with a focus on ethical stewardship and professional standards.
Through a multidisciplinary lens, the course explores key aspects of collection care and governance: legal and ethical considerations, documentation standards, storage and movement protocols, acquisition and loan procedures, and strategies for exhibitions, displays, and public access.
Structured as an engaging and practice-oriented learning path, the course combines expert-led sessions with guided discussions, critical reflection, and collaborative group activities to support a deep and practical understanding of contemporary museum practices.
Schedule
The course will be held on Mondays and Wednesdays from 6.00 pm to 8.00 pm CET from 4 May 2026 to 3 June 2026 for the total of 20 hours and will be held online on the Google Meet platform.

Admissions
The course is open to all applicants; It is not necessary to have specific previous knowledge in the field, though any background knowledge would be a plus. The course is held in English, therefore a good working knowledge of the English language is recommended.
To attend the course you will need a PC or tablet with a stable internet connection and equipped with camera and microphone.

Qualification
All participants will receive a certificate of attendance upon completion of the course.

- Legal and ethical frameworks for the management of collections in museums and galleries
- Practical aspects of collections care, including insurance, security, risk management and emergency response
- Collections information and documentation
- How museums acquire, lend and borrow objects
- Moving and storing museum objects
- Key aspects of planning and managing displays in permanent galleries and temporary exhibitions
- Providing access to the collections
