Paintings Restoration
Context
With the largest number of masterpieces and conservators of artistic heritage in the world, Florence offers the best opportunities to acquire and perfect the skills and knowledge for the protection of cultural heritage.
For 35 years, our Institute has opened its laboratories in July, August and September to students from all over the world who are interested in joining practical courses run by the same teachers as the three-year academic courses. And now, from 2024 onwards we are offering short introductory courses throughout the year.
Schedule
Monday to Friday from 09.00 to 13.00 and 14.00 to 18.00 for a total of 40 hours.
The course will be held in the restoration laboratories in Via delle Casine, 21/rosso, Florence.
Admissions
The course is open to all applicants, prior experience in restoration is not necessary.
The course is held in English. Good working knowledge of the language is required.
Special Offers
- Fee reduction of 20% for applicants who enrol before 4 March 2026.
Qualification
All participants will receive a certificate of attendance upon completion of the course.
Course Programme
• Presentation of the course programme
• General introduction to the theory of conservation with focus on preventive conservation and aesthetic restoration
• Examination of the deterioration of a painting
• Study of a painting’s structure and close observation of the paint losses
• Example of medium use for retouching and different ethical approaches
Practical workshop*
• Protection and structural recovery of the canvas, holes, tears
• Examination of the lacune (paint losses) and retouched areas, made visible under ultraviolet technologies
• Introduction to the pigments used in conservation and restoration of paintings
• Preparation and application of plaster on mock panel
• Practicum mimetic retouching and selection technique
• Preparation and filling of the paint losses on paintings
• Glazes with varnish colour to complete retouching
* Students work under supervision with real paintings during the course. Practical application of skills may vary depending on the needs of the painting.

Students are advised to enrol at least two weeks before the beginning of the course. Enrolments are accepted until all the places on the courses have been filled.
